Youth Mission Trips
2012: Washington, DC - Youth Services Opportunity Program: This organization was founded by Quakers in New York in 1982, and is committed to helping young people become part of the solution to societal problems. Through YSOP, the youth of First Church helped maintain community gardens, visit with elderly citizens in need, and prepare and serve meals for homeless and hungry people.
2011: Pittsburgh, PA - The Pittsburgh Project: For seven days, youth worked with The Pittsburgh Project, a local non-profit organization established to enable young people from all over the U.S. participate in housing rehabilitation in an urban setting. They worked at several different home projects around Pittsburgh. Through their mission efforts, they learned about the needs and the issues of injustice facing the urban poor.
2010: Atlanta, GA - Discovering Opportunities for Outreach and Reflection (DOOR): For five days, youth worked with D.O.O.R., a national non-profit organization established to enable young people to do mission work in an urban setting. They worked in soup kitchens and homeless shelters as well as at food banks, community gardens, and day camps for children.
2009: Lafargeville, NY - Ministries in the North Country (MINC): For five days, youth worked for MINC, a non-profit organization established to serve the housing needs of the rural low income households in the Watertown area of New York. They performed rehab work such as roofing, siding, and painting on a variety of homes.
2008: San Antonio, TX - Discovering Opportunities for Outreach and Reflection (DOOR): For five days, youth worked with DOOR, a national non-profit organization established to enable young people to do mission work in an urban setting. They worked in soup kitchens and homeless shelters as well as at food banks and day camps for children. Through their mission efforts, they learned about the needs and the issues of injustice facing the urban poor.
2007: Neon, KY - Housing Oriented Ministries Established for Service Inc. (HOMES): For five days, youth worked with HOMES, a non-profit organization established to serve the housing needs of the low and very low income households in Letcher, Knott, and Floyd counties. They built new homes and repaired existing homes, working alongside skilled carpenters and trades people. They also learned about the culture and people of Appalachia.
2006: Perryville, AR - Heifer Ranch, Heifer Project International: Fifteen young people and four advisors from this church and community flew to Perryville, Arkansas to take part in a mission trip at the international headquarters of the Heifer Project. They learned how to fight hunger, how to become more responsible global citizens, and how to develop a more sustainable world. They participated in educational activities like living, eating, and sleeping in the Global Village for one night, experiencing conditions similar to those that impoverished people endure all over the world every day of the year. They engaged in work projects empowering them to be good stewards of the land and livestock, and good care-takers of the earth and its people.

These include our Corned Beef and Cabbage Dinner held each March around St. Patrick's Day, and selling "stock" in our mission trips, typically available each spring. Stockholders are invited to a Shareholders Celebration in the fall, where mission trippers share stories and photos of their experiences.
