Village Lecture SeriesThe Village Lecture Series was created to celebrate the 350th anniversary of the church and the centennial anniversary of the Porter Memorial Building. The goal of this series is to invite regional and national experts to share their work and ideas about important topics.
First Church and the Village Lecture Series Committee invite one and all to the 11th annual Village Lecture Series, to be held Sunday afternoons at 4:00 pm in Sarah Porter Memorial Hall on January 6, January 13, and February 3, 2013.
Our first speaker will be Carolyn Kuan, Music Director at the Hartford Symphony Orchestra. Ms. Kuan was named to the position of Music Director in January 2011, and has been described as "one of the most exciting, innovative, and outstanding conductors of her generation." She will present some thoughts on music and the future of the Hartford Symphony Orchestra.
Eric Jay Dolin, our next speaker, a writer and historian, has spoken at the Village Lecture series in the past. His most recent book, and the subject of his presentation, is entitled When America First Met China, published by Liveright in September 2012. The book is subtitled An exotic history of tea, drugs, and money in the age of sail."
Our third and final speaker will gbe Dr. Edison T. Liu, CEO of Jackson Laboratory in Farmington. The mission of Jackson Laboratory is "to discover the genetic basis for preventing, treating, and curing human disease."
